Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune and their satellite systems, read twice: once by measurement and modelling, once by the anthroposophical picture of the moon as what a living system had to set down. The two readings are kept in separate columns.
Observational astronomy reads a satellite system through measurement: mass, orbit, inclination, spectrum, and the gravitational modelling that reconstructs how a body arrived where it is. It asks how a moon formed.
Anthroposophy approaches the solar system as an evolving organism in which physical bodies are the visible vestment of spiritual activity. It asks what a moon means within an evolutionary history.
These are different questions, and this page keeps them in separate columns. Reading them side by side is worthwhile. Treating either as evidence for the other is not, and the closing caution says why.
Measured
The outer solar system divides into two classes. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants: solid cores of roughly ten Earth masses formed beyond the iceline and grew large enough, early enough, to trigger runaway accretion of hydrogen and helium before the solar wind cleared the disk. Uranus and Neptune are ice giants: forming further out in thinner material, they assembled their icy cores too slowly to capture much gas, and their bulk is water, ammonia and methane.
Their moons divide in two as well. Regular satellites hold near-circular prograde orbits close to the planet’s equatorial plane; they formed in place, in the circumplanetary disk that surrounded each giant during its final accretion. Irregular satellites hold eccentric, steeply inclined and often retrograde orbits far out toward the edge of the planet’s gravitational domain; they are planetesimals captured from solar orbit.
That domain is the Hill sphere — the region where the planet’s gravity wins against the Sun’s tidal pull. Permanent capture into it requires something to bleed off kinetic energy: drag in a residual nebula, a three-body encounter, or the upheaval of giant-planet migration.

Steiner describes seven great cycles through which the solar system and human consciousness pass: Old Saturn, Old Sun, Old Moon, present Earth, and the future conditions named Jupiter, Venus and Vulcan. On Old Saturn the physical body was laid down as a heat-organism through the sacrifice of the Thrones. On Old Sun the etheric body was implanted. On Old Moon the astral body was added. On Earth the I entered, and self-consciousness became possible.
During these cycles bodies separate from the central mass so that conditions suited to different beings can exist side by side rather than in one undifferentiated whole.
Keep these apart
These seven are evolutionary conditions of the whole system, not the planets of a birth chart. “Future Jupiter” is a stage of cosmic development; it is not the planet Jupiter, not the Jupiter sphere, and not a natal placement. The app keeps these two vocabularies permanently apart, and nothing on this page may be read across that line.

Steiner’s picture of a moon is unusually blunt. A moon is the corpse of the planetary system — Leichnam des Planetensystems. To spiritual observation, he says, looking at a moon gives the same impression as looking at a human corpse: cast-off, hardened matter from which the living, forming activity has withdrawn.
The reason given is evolutionary rather than punitive. What was ejected was the excessively hardening, mummifying element — dense mineral salt-forces and rigidifying astral substance. Had it stayed inside the parent body it would have paralysed the life there and stopped soul development. Separation is what allows the remainder to keep evolving. The beings still active within these bodies work from the Third Hierarchy downward, at the level of the Archangels.
In the same picture the Sun functions as the etheric body of the system, systemic space as its astral body, and comets as a cleansing activity that carries harmful astral substance outward.
Each system below is given in both columns. The left is measurement; the right is interpretation, carrying its own register so you can see how far the claim reaches.
Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto (Galilean); Himalia and Carme groups
Measured
The Galileans formed by accretion in Jupiter’s circumplanetary disk and hold a 4:2:1 Laplace resonance between Io, Europa and Ganymede. The outer irregular groups are captured carbonaceous planetesimals. Io’s volcanism and Europa’s subsurface ocean are driven by tidal flexing from that resonance — external forcing, not internal life.
Read
Jupiter is read as the sphere of the Kyriotetes, the Spirits of Wisdom — cosmic thinking, and an expansive, artistic soul-quality. The moons are read as the dense material separated off so that this quality could develop unimpeded.
Titan, Enceladus, Iapetus, the ring moons; 100+ irregulars
Measured
Titan carries a dense nitrogen atmosphere and a working hydrocarbon cycle. Enceladus vents water from a subsurface ocean. The rings are an actively evolving system of ice particles, and hundreds of outer irregulars occupy eccentric retrograde paths.
Read
Saturn is the boundary of the classical planetary system and holds the memory of the Old Saturn condition — the beginning of physical substance. Its satellites are read as the mementos of that primordial hardening, standing at the edge.
Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon; ~22 irregulars
Measured
Uranus is tipped roughly 98° from the ecliptic, most plausibly by a giant impact during assembly. Its five major moons orbit neatly in the planet’s tilted equatorial plane, which indicates they accreted from a debris disk formed after that impact — the system was rebuilt around the new axis.
Read
Because Uranus is held to stand outside the original sevenfold chain, its satellites are read as matter organised outside the karmic stream of this system, and the extreme tilt as an image of that foreignness.
Triton, Proteus, Nereid
Measured
Triton is large, retrograde and steeply inclined — captured from the Kuiper Belt, most likely by binary exchange. Its arrival disrupted whatever regular satellite system Neptune originally had, scattering or destroying it. The present inner moons formed afterwards from the debris.
Read
Neptune is described as a capture from outside the system, and Triton’s violently disruptive arrival is read as an image of that same status at the smaller scale.
The claim most often repeated on this subject is that Steiner excluded Uranus and Neptune from the sevenfold evolutionary scheme — that although they orbit our Sun they do not originate in its evolutionary stream, Neptune in particular being described as a capture from the wider cosmos, and that the true inner boundary of this system is Saturn.
This app treats that as tradition rather than stated doctrine, for a specific reason: the claim circulates widely in secondary and web sources, but a located lecture reference is hard to produce. Until one is cited with a GA number and a date, the honest register is tradition — the picture is reported, attributed, and not upgraded by repetition.
What can be said plainly is narrower and still interesting. Saturn was the visible perimeter of the system for the whole of recorded antiquity, and the classical planetary sequence the app works with ends there. Uranus and Neptune entered human awareness at datable moments, 1781 and 1846, and it is those thresholds — not a settled doctrine about cosmic origin — that the app builds on elsewhere.

These pairings belong to modern psychological astrology, not to Steiner. They are offered as fields of attention for historical reflection, never as an account of what an individual chart determines. Where these forces are described as working on the subconscious, the responsible reading is that they ask for conscious integration — not that they compel anything.
The measured picture is secure: two classes of giant planet, two classes of satellite, a Hill sphere that sets the boundary of capture, and four systems whose particular histories are legible in their present geometry.
The spiritual picture is coherent on its own terms and, in the part that is properly cited, striking: separation as the condition of continued development, and a moon as what a living system had to set down in order to keep going.
Holding both without collapsing either is the actual work. The temptation is to make one the evidence for the other, because that would feel like arriving somewhere. Declining that is not a failure of the study — it is the study.

Take one of the four systems and write the measured account and the read account in two columns yourself, without a connecting sentence between them. Notice how strongly the hand wants to write that sentence. That pull is the thing to study.
