Doctrine · Karmic Relationships (GA 236/239/240) & GA 110
The ancient skywatcher did not see inert orbs but a script of dwelling-places, each star and planet a home for spiritual Beings whose deeds continue to shape the destinies woven between souls. To read the heavens rightly is to read biography, not mechanism: the Sun and Moon are neighborhoods of the living, not forces radiating blindly through space.
Beings: the primeval Teachers who once walked the Earth in spirit bodies and withdrew at the Moon's separation
having once poured the primordial wisdom into humanity through inner illumination, they now draw near the dead on the backward journey after death, permeating the soul's life-pictures with cosmic substance so that karmic deeds are experienced with overwhelming, living force; they also take special interest in those human kinships that well up from inner affinity rather than outer traits
GA 240
Beings: the Sun Beings, of whom the Christ is the sublime Sun-Being
they interest themselves in the threads woven between soul and soul in those human relationships that can be described only from within, and it was from a Sun-Being that the Impulse of the Mystery of Golgotha poured into mankind
GA 240
Beings: the Thrones (Spirits of Will) and their memory-hosts
Keepers of the cosmic Akashic memory; the sphere where the soul meets the full record of its past.
GA 110
Beings: the Cherubim (Spirits of Harmony)
Bearers of the wisdom-order of the whole fixed-star heaven, within which the planetary spheres move.
GA 110
The soul carries what it lived across the threshold, and one life's inner quality becomes the next life's form or temperament. These are pictures for reflection, never predictions, never a formula to apply to any chart or person.
A strong spiritual repudiation of a quality lived out in a past incarnation does not remain an abstract judgment but crystallizes into a concrete personal antipathy or temperament in the following life. What was once a considered rejection returns as an involuntary feeling-tone of the new personality.
A picture to hold
Picture a once-clear thought sinking below the surface of soul-life until it surfaces again as a wordless mood.
Where in my instinctive likes and dislikes might an old, half-forgotten judgment still be quietly at work?
Experiences withheld by circumstance in one incarnation—such as a life spent in captivity—create a karmic necessity to live through the corresponding freedom and open contact with the world in a later life. What was missed becomes the very task of the next earthly journey.
A picture to hold
Imagine a door left unopened in one lifetime standing wide open, waiting, in the next.
What capacity did I not get to exercise fully before, and how might I be living it out now?
Seen this way, a chart is not a diagram of impersonal fates pulling at a life but a record of encounters with Beings—Teachers who once taught us on Earth, a Sun-Being whose deed streamed into history—so that to interpret it is to trace living relationships and deeds, not forces.

Two souls who once worked together on a common task may, through world karma, separate across incarnations to develop different facets of that same impulse in different regions or spheres of culture, only to converge again later in mutual effect. The one shared origin becomes two distinct destinies that still serve one purpose.

See one river dividing around an island, only to join again further downstream.
Is there a companionship or collaboration in my life that seems to be pursuing its purpose along two separate roads?
A moral action done to another in life—even one shrugged off at the time—is, after death, experienced from within the other person's being as their actual pain and suffering rather than as a memory of one's own act. This reversal of perspective becomes the seed of a moral impulse carried into the next incarnation.
A picture to hold
Feel, for a moment, another's old wound as though it were happening in your own body.
If I could feel, right now, the lasting effect of a careless deed on the one who received it, what would I wish to change?
At death the boundary of the skin dissolves so that what was formerly one's private inner moral life becomes an objective outer world one now dwells within, while the former outer world becomes inner experience. Moral life is thereby transformed from a hidden possession into a shared reality that shapes the soul's future orientation.
A picture to hold
Picture stepping out of your own body and finding your past feelings spread around you like a landscape.
Which of my private moral feelings would I be willing to have become visible, shared world?
The same reversal of experience that occurs fully after death already occurs faintly every night in sleep, remaining below the threshold of consciousness as mere picture rather than lived reality. Nightly life thus quietly rehearses, in miniature, the karmic law that will govern the soul after death.
A picture to hold
Think of a dream that touches, and lets go of, a truth the waking mind is not yet ready to bear.
What might my ordinary nights already be showing me about the moral weight of my days, if I could remember it?
A soul that lived surrounded by and inwardly delighting in beauty in one earthly life can carry that devotion over as the very beauty and health of its bodily form in the next.
A picture to hold
The eye that loved beautiful things in one life becomes, in the next, a face others find beautiful to look upon.
What do I turn toward with genuine delight; and what might it be quietly shaping in me?
What the soul receives from the wide cosmos between death and rebirth is drawn inward and condensed into the individual bodily constitution; the great world becomes the small world of the single human being.
A picture to hold
The whole starry sky contracts, over the journey to birth, into the form of one human body.
Where in my own nature might I be carrying a piece of the cosmos I passed through before birth?
What lives in the metabolic-limb system; the sphere of will and deed; in one earthly life is carried over by karma to shape the head, its very form and physiognomy, in the next. The active limbs of today can be read as the thinking-instrument of tomorrow, so that the head one bears now is the transformed will-life of a former incarnation, legible only to a perception that has learned to read it as one learns to read letters.
A picture to hold
See the working hands and walking limbs of one life quietly folding, over the long journey between lives, into the domed and quiet form of a head.
If the way I act and move today were slowly becoming the shape of a future thinking, what would I wish that thinking to have been built from?
A quality intensely admired or held as an ideal in one life; even a quality met in an adversary once fought against; can be inwardly caught and taken on as one's own bodily stature and characteristics in a later incarnation. What the soul reveres, it slowly grows toward, until reverence has ripened into very form.
A picture to hold
Picture the quality you most admire in another standing before you like a mirror you are slowly, over lifetimes, stepping into.
What quality do I most admire in someone I find difficult; and could that admiration be quietly shaping me toward it?
Much of what lives in a soul as feeling and will-impulse never crosses over into outer deed. What remains held back, uncarried into action, does not simply vanish: it gathers beneath the threshold as karma in the making, and is carried through the gate of death into the shaping of a future life.
A picture to hold
Imagine every impulse felt but not acted upon settling like fine sediment into a seed that may be placed in your hands again one day.
Which of my unacted intentions am I quietly storing; and are they the seeds I would choose to carry forward?
Between the etheric and physical body, passed through each morning as one wakes, lies the woven record of past karma; between willing and acting, passed through each evening as one falls asleep, the karma of the future is forming. Between these two boundaries lies the open middle region of the free deed, where genuine freedom can be said to live.
A picture to hold
See a single day as a bridge; past karma waiting at the morning end, future karma gathering at the evening end, and your free deeds walking the span between.
In the free middle of my day, between what I inherit and what I am sowing, what am I actually choosing to do?
What is moral organization at one period of the world becomes physical organization at another: all moral things are destined, in the long reaches of time, to emerge as physical things. The light and beauty of nature can be read as the finished moral-spiritual life of beings who went before us, and one's own moral deeds can be read as the shining world-substance of a distant future.
A picture to hold
Look at the light filling a landscape and hold it as the completed moral life of beings long past; then hold the thought that your own deeds may one day shine so for others.
If my moral life today were the raw material of a future world's light, what kind of world am I helping to make?
The capacity for mathematical and geometrical thought; all that is grasped in line, number and measure; is not first invented in this life but re-emerges as a mirror of the soul's passage through the whole macrocosm before birth. Having moved through the measure and order of the entire cosmos, the soul carries its faint memory as the seemingly self-evident truths of mathematics.
A picture to hold
Picture a clear geometric figure rising in the mind as the last, condensed echo of a journey once made through the whole ordered heaven.
What in me feels simply self-evident; and might it be the quiet residue of a far larger journey the soul once made?
A soul-quality cultivated inwardly in one life; a mood of devotion, reverence or sustained feeling; can ripen across the journey between lives into an artistic gift or a marked temperament in the next. The inner colouring of one incarnation may become the visible talent and disposition of another.
A picture to hold
See a quiet, long-held feeling deepening like dye slowly taken up by cloth, until in another life it shows as a gift others can see.
What inner mood am I cultivating so faithfully that it might one day become a visible gift?
The consciousness a soul carries through death is coloured by the moral and religious warmth it gave to its inner life. This warmth can be read as what keeps the bond with one's guiding spiritual being a living, inward relationship rather than a merely outer tie; so that tending the moral life becomes, at the same time, tending a companionship that continues beyond death.
A picture to hold
Imagine the warmth of your kindest and most reverent moments as a lamp you carry, by whose light a companion can still find you when the long journey begins.
Where might I give more inward warmth to my moral life, so that what guides me remains a living companion rather than a distant rule?
